Todays post will be all about lenses and where to use them. I am inspired by a followers question about indoor sports photography like horse arenas. While most of my my sporting events are outdoors, the horse community does come across a time of the year where they show at indoor locations like the Evergreen Fairgrounds. We need high shutter speeds but, need to let in as much light as possible. In the end you’re left with blurry, grainy, and under exposed images. How do we fix this? First, as I always say, “work with what you’ve got”. Shoot wide open to let in the light (low f stop) and adjust your shutter speed to something that does the job! One of my first mistakes was thinking I needed the fastest speed possible in order to catch a moving subject. I normally shoot a little more than my focal length. For example, an 85mm lens I would shoot somewhere around 1/125 depending on the lighting and situation. This method delivers well lit, sharp photos. Now that I’ve babbled about the technical stuff, allow me to actually answer the question. If I had my ideal lens for this situation, it would be a 70-200mm 2.8. While on the pricey side, it allows an acceptional amount of light in while keeping a tack sharp focus. However, I’m a girl on a budget. So while I dream about this lens I will continue to use my Tamron 28-300mm manual focus lens. It’s a little tricky but it does the job! Onto portraits. How do you achieve creamy skin and a blurry background? Personally I’m a sucker for a good prime lens. My “nifty fifty” has earned her weight in gold for the beautiful pictures it yields. My basic set up is a 35mm, 50mm, and an 85mm. Ranging from the widest angle to the closest and all between 1.8 and 1.2 aperture. Remember, the lower the f stop the blurrier the background. Sometimes this allows for a softer focus so really hone in on the subjects eye closest to you! I hope this gave you a little insight on my workflow and lens preferences. Welcome to our first post in the client series! We asked you, the client, what you want to know about photography. Our number one question.... WHAT DO I WEAR?! Have no fear, CRM is here! Below are a few tips and tricks for every type of session we offer. Portraits- What kind of pictures fall into this category? Seniors, headshots, bloggers and more! Pretty much any type of picture that is all about you. My first and most important tip is feeling comfortable . Remember these picture are about you and we want to capture the true spirit that everyone knows! Also, the way you feel will reflect in your images. If your clothes are too tight or unflattering that is all you will be thinking about! So, fitted (not tight) and structured clothes that fit to your natural waist will give you the best shape in your images! Next, we have colors and prints. Being in the cloudy PNW, our overcast sky’s give us the perfect backdrop to really let colors pop! With all of our greenery I am a big fan of neutral and warm muted colors (browns, deep yellows, greens, and even dark reds). Below you will find one of my FAVORITE examples. I absolutely love the way the warm colors of our subjects shirt bring all the focus to her and her sidekick! It’s a beautiful contrast against the neutral tones of Washington state. This is also a great example of working in a natural environment. In our next photo you will see a great example of neutrals against a city location. Here you will notice our subject is in a busier background. Because she is dressed in solid neutrals with minimal accessories, this brings all of the focus to her instead of her environment. Couples and Families- In my opinion, this is where I get the most inquiries on how to dress. Do we match? Do we wear opposites? Or should we just wear every day clothes?! This subject can make you pull your hair out if you don’t have guidance. My best advice is to coordinate . My favorite is the combination of solids and prints with the same color palate. I will post a few examples below. These are some great examples of how neutral colors work together! You will notice our couples followed the solids/patterns advice while staying in the same color scheme. While our family is sporting the group of neutrals to come together for a cohesive look! I hope these tips have inspired you for your next photo shoot! Stay tuned for part two where I will be covering bridal and boudoir attire!
As always please feel free to contact me with any questions! with love and laughter, Cassidy CRM Photography Let me start out by saying welcome and thank you for visiting our page! You’re probably wondering who I am and why the heck I am doing this. Let me tell you... My name is Cassidy. I am a wife, mother, photographer, and “do it all-er”. I opened up CRM about a year ago simply because I loved taking pictures but, pictures of what? EVERYTHING! I haven’t picked a niche because I find love in portraits, in couples, in new mamas, and lets face it. I love love! I started my adventure focusing on equine photography as I have grown up in the horse community my entire life! To this day horses and riders are one of my favorite things to capture. I believe a photo of a girl and her horse can tell a story better than any human couple can try to explain. It’s always meant to be and it’s always an unconditional love. Not too long after, I started getting into couples, portraits, boudoir, and even weddings! At the end of the day, the common theme is that I get to show people their own radiant beauty through the lens! The beauty that everyone else sees every day. This is what drives me. So here you are! My first blog post. A little about me and more about my mission! Stay tuned to follow me at photo shoots and learn about my journey.
